Hashish, often just called hash, is a concentrated form of cannabis made by extracting resin glands (trichomes) from the Flowers of the cannabis plant. The appearance of hash can vary a lot, depending on where it's from, how it's made, and the cannabis strain used. Most of the time, the color ranges from light brown to dark brown, sometimes even almost black. The surface can be smooth and shiny, especially if the hash is tightly pressed, or a bit grainy and sandy if it's less compacted. Hand-rubbed hash from places like Afghanistan or India is usually sticky and soft, while dry-sifted hash, made by sifting dried Flowers, is more crumbly and firm.
What does good hash look like?
Judging the quality of hashish takes a trained eye and a good nose. Top-quality hash should have an even and distinct color, which depends on the cannabis strain used. Another sign of quality is the texture: good hash feels firm but shouldn't be too hard. When it gets warm, it should bend easily without getting overly sticky – that shows the right balance between moisture and resin content. A strong but pleasant aroma that reminds you of the original cannabis plant is also a sign of high-quality processing. The so-called bubble test can help too: if the hash starts to bubble and burns cleanly when heated, it's good quality. If the smoke turns black or there are no bubbles, that could mean it's contaminated.
